Accounts Receivable Job Description

General Purpose: to process all of the incoming invoices for either a department or company. Sometimes it does involve collection calls but usually only in smaller companies. Depending on the business nature of the company the collections are done with either another company, also called B2B (business to business), or directly with consumers.
Main Work Tasks and Duties: Here are some accounts receivable duties. As an AR Clerk you can expect to be process invoices on a regular basis. It is a highly repetitive position and you have to enjoy routine and an attention for detail. In larger companies, you will be processing invoices at a very high level. The Accounts Receivable Supervisor will more than likely establish weekly goals that they will want your to match along with a high degree of accuracy. As anything related to accounting, accuracy is just as important (if not more important) than quantity. Other administrative tasks would include mailing out letters to customers or businesses who are behind on payment, review terms of business/service contracts, set up payment schedules, and trace change of addresses.
Training and Experience: In some regard, an accounts receivable clerk is considered to be an entry level position. Although an associates degree in accounting is helpful most that enter at this level have just a high school degree and possibly some light accounting experience. Someone performing just collections is not necessarily a good fit as there is a difference between being able to call and collect payment and doing heavy data entry.
Crucial Competencies: Someone who loves routine and does not mind staying busy performing the same tasks everyday. Some personalities fit better with an AR clerk job then others. Strong 10-key to the touch is very crucial and important. Your ability to work fast and accurate is an essential competency for an accounts payable clerk.
Again, this is a basic accounts receivable description. You job may vary as it depends on the nature of the business your company possesses.
